While regular training allows a variety of kimonos and comfortable shoes, sambo competitions and official events require a uniform that meets specific regulations.

The jacket (“sambovka”) is cut differently from a judo kimono and made from a dense cotton fabric, with reinforced seams and characteristic shoulder “wings” designed for grips. Belt loops on each side keep the jacket in place during a match, and a soft cotton lining underneath adds comfort. Regulation sizing matters too: sleeves should reach the wrist and measure at least 10 cm wide, and the jacket’s flaps should fall about 15 cm below the belt — not shorter or longer.

Wrestling shoes are held to lighter but still specific standards. They should be made of soft, natural materials (leather is standard, though fabric inserts are allowed) with all stitching finished on the inside and no sharp or protruding parts that could cause injury. Soft leather soles are essential for safety and comfort, and the shoes should fully cover the ankle with a secure, snug fit — soft leather linings help protect the ankle bones from impact.

Shorts must match the jacket’s color, cover the upper third of the thigh, and have no hard elements or pockets, which could pose a safety risk during a match.
